Showgirl brings campdraft back to Imbil Showgrounds
CAMPDRAFTING returns to Imbil after many years when Gympie Showgirl entrant Ashleigh Ensbey hosts the event on March 21-22 at the picturesque Imbil Showgrounds.
While she is a Showgirl entrant for the ring section of Gympie and District Show Society, Ashleigh decided to pay homage to her family history in the Mary Valley by holding the event at Imbil.
Gympie District Show Society president Graham Engeman and Mary Valley Show Society president Kaili Parker-Price welcomed the alliance between the two organisations, which are both renowned for presenting some of the best country shows outside the metropolitan region.
Ashleigh's property at Kandanga has been in the family for three generations.
Her father Neville has been drafting since he was "a little fella" and the girls -- Ashleigh and sisters Danielle and Alexis - are competent riders.
Mum Lyndall Ensbey believes it is well over 25 years since a campdraft was held at Imbil.
"My husband drafted there and remembers the good reputation the Imbil grounds created in the campdrafting arena," she said.
"Ashleigh (and all of us) have worked solidly putting together the program, securing sponsors and cattle to make this a successful draft.
"All cattle will be drawn from the Mary Valley and promise to be of good quality, which all campdrafters look for."
The ACA affiliated campdraft has garnered interest further afield, with nominations coming from as far as Beaudesert, Mundubbera and Biloela.
Action starts at 9am on Saturday March 21 with the maiden/novice combined draft, offering $1600 prize money. Gympie Feed Barn has sponsored the highest cut-out for each event.
Events start at 8am on Sunday with the junior draft for eight-year-olds to under-13s. The three round open draft on Sunday will see campdrafting at its best.
Camping facilities are available at the showgrounds, and in the Imbil area.
Entertainment on Saturday night includes a live band, licensed bar and canteen.
Major sponsors for the event are Gympie Regional Realty, Sullivan Livestock and Rural Services and Warrego Livestock Transport.
