Info for Carers

Carers are invited to the Noosa Library at Wallace Park, Noosaville from 10 am on 24th September to check out a new information roadshow traversing Queensland's Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay that is raising awareness about the broad range of services available to carers and the immense value of the caring role performed within the community.

Launched in July 2003, the project has involved the conversion of a van into a mobile information and resource centre which travels between Caboolture and Bundaberg and surrounding areas, staying for a few hours or a whole day depending on the community's need.

The bus visits communities to provide carers with access to information, trained staff, local service provider representatives and volunteers and also to promote the value of education and volunteerism in the community. The project is being co-ordinated by the Sunshine Coast Commonwealth Carer Respite Centre and spokesperson Carol Woods says in addition to providing information the Carebus (not to be confused with Noosa's much loved Carrabus at Carramar) is collecting data and building a pool of knowledge about the unmet needs of carers in rural, remote and regional communities.

"Carers are typically defined as people who care for a frail aged person, a person with dementia, a young or older person with a physical or mental disability, or they may provide support for a person who is terminally or chronically ill,"says Carol. "A Carer may be a relative or friend of the person to whom they provide home-based care. Some do not identify themselves as Carers and can be identified as hidden carers.

"We also hope to identify those carers not accessing support services and assist them wherever possible. Many Carers in rural and remote communities are not only geographically isolated from services but can also be socially isolated as well."

Carer-based information and resources are available in a number of languages, on audio and video tape as well as via the Internet. The Carebus will be available to the community at the Noosa Library from 10 am on 24th September, 5th October, 10th November and 17th December.
