The coast’s famous long range weather forecaster, Inigo Jones, brings the community together this weekend to salute the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast.

Four great events commemorate this weekend, as the Festival of Community Halls enters its third week, running to September. Former resident of the area, Inigo Jones (1872-1954), was a household name throughout Australia with farmers relying on his advice, with questions like “Plant now Mr Jones?”.

During the 1893 floods, he measured Australia’s record rainfall for 24 hours, 907mm at Crohamhurst, a record which still stands today. Inigo is immortalised in the film “Deluge” where in 1893, Brisbane had three floods in two weeks. The events that followed put Brisbane and South-East Queensland into the world headlines.

“Deluge” highlights the heroic efforts of Henry Somerset and Billy Mateer as they fought to get a warning to Brisbane of the horrendous floods bearing down on its citizens. You can enjoy the movie, meal and memorabilia at Peachester Hall on Friday August 11 from 6pm.

If you are in Caloundra on Friday, join entertainer Roy Morris at the SSCA Hall from 9am. Then on August 12 at 7am, it’s the Growers and Makers Market on the Village Green in Montville with the hall hosting “From farm to cafe”, a history of the Montville community.

For some country fun, Kenilworth Show and Rodeo Princess Ball will get you up and dancing with the Sunshine Swing Band from 7pm. The Festival of Community Halls has combined the energy and community spirit of twenty halls as they celebrate the important role halls have played in creating the social fabric of our region, and the ways in which they continue to do so. Take a country drive and checkout the full event details at www.sunshinecoastcommunityhalls.com or follow them on Facebook.

This project has been proudly supported by the Sunshine Coast Council’s 50th Anniversary Fund.
