INSIGHT BY TOUCH
Fran Parkes is one sculptor who encourages the public touch her creations. This is not surprising as her clients report that they are drawn to her work by a compulsion to caress the sculptures sensuousness and elegant finish. Given that this is cold hard clay, it is quite an achievement and the art is now seriously being collected following exhibitions in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
You can see Fran Parkes' work in her current exhibition at the Noosa Regional Gallery which will run from January 10th to the 21st. This is a new body of work and features the female form. It is a subject that gives Fran a lot of scope and a loyal following. Her explorations in clay always being something new to the medium and the subject. This has guaranteed her work being used in contemporary interior design.
Technically Fran has perfected an almost tool free approach to constructing each hand-built piece. She says "How the sculpture feels is as important as how it looks and this organic way of working gets the results".
The exhibition will be opened by Jackie Gasson, President of the Sunshine Coast Clayworkers Association at 2 pm on Saturday 10th January, 2004
