Currimundi Catchment Care Group (CCCG) is organising work teams in April to add 60 metres to the coir log wall along Currimundi Lake in Noel Burns Park. This wall is the continuation of an erosion control strategy to stabilise the bank, limit erosion and filter water flowing from the park into the Lake.
Coir logs are made from coconut fibre and are light and flexible. This makes them ideal for moulding around the contour of river banks. The first 60 metres were constructed in 2009 and extensions in 2011 and 2012 have extended the wall to 150 metres. This year the Group is calling for volunteers to assist in installing the wall. President Tony Moorhead said that there are jobs for all fitness levels.
“To construct the wall we install the coir logs, lay jute matting and then plant bank stabilising plants. If you can come for a day or a few hours your contribution will be much appreciated and a barbeque lunch will be provided.” The Sunshine Coast Council will provide all necessary components for the work and will supervise the installation.
The work will take place on 22, 23 and 24 April from 8.30am to 3.00pm each day. Please meet opposite Warloo Street in Noel Burns Park, Mulloka Esp, Wurtulla and wear covered footwear, suitable clothing and a hat. Sunscreen and gloves will be provided.
