Imbil based Far A Way Riders will hold an education and training event this weekend at the Imbil Showground.
There will be talks and demonstrations on Saturday from 10.30am, and these are designed for people who have little or no experience in endurance riding.
Topics to be covered will include selecting a horse, feeding, shoeing and training, clothing and equipment needed, and the various procedures involved in the veterinary check of horses.
Those who attend will be given instruction in how to take the heart rate and temperature of their horse, and how to trot the horse out for the vet to see it well.
Brook Sample, the six time winner of the Tom Quilty Gold Cup will be one of the speakers, supported by his wife Leigh Ann, and his father Bob Sample who has more than 40 years of experience at a top level in endurance.
International equine dental expert Leith Ryan will talk about the vital importance of the mouth and teeth in a horse’s health and performance.
On Sunday a 20 kilometre introductory ride will be held. This will be over an easy course and an experienced pace rider will accompany the group.
Pre-ride vet inspection for this will be at 7am on Sunday. A qualified vet and chief steward will guide riders new to endurance through the procedures. The minimum time to complete this ride is three hours and it is expected that all riders will finish in less than four hours.
Interested riders, or their family and friends can obtain more information or book a place with the club secretary Sue Jones on 0411 407047 or by email to email@example.com
Endurance riding is a family friendly sport with people from all age groups participating. Those who will be there at Imbil on the weekend will range from five year old to over 70.
