Symphony Hill Wines is a family-owned boutique winery located in the cool climate Ballandean highlands of Queensland’s Granite Belt. Ewen and Elissa Macpherson bought the old table grape and orchard property in 1996 after falling in love with the area and its potential for premium wine production, and in partnership with Ewen’s parents Bob and Jill Macpherson have developed the vineyard to its present high standard. Symphony Hill Wines is a family focussed venture with, at one stage, four generations of the family living on the property.
Ewen completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Viticulture and found the information gained in his studies invaluable in establishing the vineyard to produce ultra-premium quality from the first vintage. In fact their first vintage of Shiraz was awarded top gold at the 2005 Royal Sydney Wine Show and was the first QLD win to wine gold at a National show south of the border. Since then they have won more golds at both Sydney and Melbourne Royal Melbourne Wine Show with last year’s Royal Melbourne entry of Reserve Shiraz being awarded top gold and finalist for two trophies including Best Shiraz and Best Single Vineyard trophies. They were beaten for the Best Shiraz trophy by the Jimmy Watson winner that year!
Ewen is Managing Director and oversees all areas of the business working closely with their winemaker, Mike Hayes. Ewen was voted by the editors of Australian Wine Buiness Magazine as in the top 50 stars of the Australian Wine Industry after featuring Symphony Hill Wines on their front cover.
So where is their wine sold? Their wine can be found in many of South East QLD’s top restaurants such as Aria, Tank, Bretts Wharf and Il Centro. Their cellar door is very busy in winter when people come to the Granite Belt to experience log fires and freezing temperatures. They have a large wine club where members receive regular deliveries of their wine at discounted prices. They also export their wines to China with their biggest seller being a wine named in honour of their daughter they adopted from China in 2004. The wine is named ‘Dan Ying’ and translates to Red Singing Bird with 10% of sales being donated to charities supporting Asian orphans.
