Wednesday 22 March 2006  Council launches new autumn sporting program

The mercury might be starting to dip, but that's no reason to pack away your sports shoes yet!

Caloundra City's Council's 'out there and active' program has just launched a 'smorgasbord' of activities, perfectly suited to the new season.

Caloundra City Mayor Don Aldous said the 'Sporting Smorgasbord' program was designed to give Caloundra City residents, 18 years and over, an opportunity to have a go at activities they haven't previously tried or ones they might not have done for a while.

"This program offers our residents a chance to learn something new, at the same time, boosting their health and social life," Cr Aldous said.

Activities on offer include self defence, tap/showtime dancing, karate, low impact exercise, wheelchair ballroom dancing, yoga-cise (a combination of yoga and Pilates), yoga and golf.

Autumn activities run from April to June 2006 and are free for CalPass holders. A small fee may apply to some activities for non-members.

The program is jointly funded by Caloundra City Council and Sport and Recreation Queensland.

Autumn activities:

SELF DEFENCE - May 4 to 25 (inclusive)   Thursdays
Location: Queen Street Hall, Caloundra
Time: 6.30pm-7.30pm

TAP/SHOWTIME DANCING - May 2 to 23 (inclusive)   Tuesdays
Location: Lake Kawana Community Centre, Sportsmans Parade, Bokarina
Time: 1pm-2.30pm

KARATE - April 24 to May 10 (inclusive)   
Location: Beerwah & District Community Hall, 12 Turner Street, Beerwah
What: 3 weeks of classes (2 classes per week on Mondays and Wednesdays)
Time: 5.30pm-7pm
** NB: Participants must be able to attend both weekly karate lessons for the three-week duration.

LOW IMPACT EXERCISE - May 8 to June 5 Mondays
Location: Uniting Church Hall, Queen Street, Caloundra
Time: 11am-12pm

WHEELCHAIR BALLROOM DANCING - May 5 to 19 (inclusive)   Fridays
Location: Kawana Community Hall, Nanyima Street, Buddina
Time: 3pm-4pm

YOGA-CISE - Day class - April 19 to May 17   Wednesdays
Location: Sunshine Coast Thai Boxing Centre, Textile Avenue, Warana
Time: 11am-12pm

YOGA-CISE - Night class - May 2 to 30  Tuesdays
Location: Lake Kawana Community Centre, Sportsmans Avenue, Bokarina
Time: 6.15pm-7.15pm

Location: Beerwah & District Community Hall, 12 Turner Street, Beerwah
