Since last year’s centenary celebratory concert with Katie Noonan it’s been a big year for Eumundi’s School of Arts community hall. For those unaware, this building is actually owned and looked after by our community, not by council or state government but by Eumundi and a large, dedicated group of people over its life and many ups and downs. When it was built in 1912 it was two storeys and considered one of the finest in SE Qld, but an infestation by termites saw it being lowered to one storey. Old wooden halls need plenty of maintenance and this year has been an expensive one, but the community is committed to preserving this piece of history and see it continue for the next generations.
Katie Noonan and her musical friends have again offered to help us celebrate this icon of Eumundi as it turns 101. Tickets sold fast last year and we could have filled the hall twice, so get in quickly. A showcase of jazz with a classical flavour is on offer, featuring the four times ARIA winning and seven times platinum selling songstress Katie Noonan with her jazz trio Elixir - featuring Zac Hurren on saxophone and Stephen Magnusson on guitar - and the beautiful Tulipwood String Quartet – led by cellist Louise King and featuring Benjamin Greaves, Eugenie Costello and Raquel Bastos.
Katie Noonan's technical mastery and pure voice makes her one of Australia’s most versatile and beloved vocalists. Kate Ceberano says of Katie’s voice, “Katie is the voice I have in my dreams...soaring and no note too impossible to reach. She makes something so difficult seem so easy. Her voice is the sound of wonder to me”. “We’re about freedom and spontaneity, particularly in a live set,” explains Katie. “Our aim is to make gentle, intimate music.” The Tulipwood String Quartet is led by virtuoso cellist Louise King.
Louise migrated to Australia in 2003 and she specialises in performing contemporary, classical or baroque music on an authentic instrument and is also a passionate and inspirational teacher. Her music making is daring and vibrant and she plays with a stylish freshness and breath-taking versatility. The Tulipwood String Quartet play regularly with Katie Noonan and Elixir and appeared at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival with her and CIRCA in 2012.
