Chamber to party like it's 1986
1986. It was the era of leg warmers, shoulder pads, big hair and boom boxes, and for the Kawana Chamber of Commerce it was the start of a 30-year journey that has seen the not-for-profit develop into a prominent voice for local business and industry.
In a nod to its humble beginnings in 1986, the organisation will dust off the fluoro sweatbands and host an 80s-themed birthday party – complete with synthesised pop tunes, disco lights and some seriously garish outfits – at the Lake Kawana Community Centre on Wednesday, 7 September to celebrate three decades of operation.
Kawana Chamber of Commerce President Linda Delamotte said it was exciting to reach such a significant milestone and she looked forward to reminiscing with both past and present chamber members over some 80s-themed cocktails and finger food.
“As with any business or organisation, it’s important to celebrate the wins and take time to reflect on how the establishment has grown and evolved over time, so I’m sure there will be plenty of entertaining anecdotes from years gone by shared on the night,” Ms Delamotte said.
“Over the past three decades, the chamber has expanded from a small gathering of businesspeople at the former Stewart’s Kawana Waters Hotel (now known as the Kawana Waters Hotel), to a thriving collective of members engaging in a range of business-building initiatives and networking opportunities.”
“We couldn’t have gotten to where we are today without the efforts of the many dedicated volunteers and workers who have put so much time and effort into building the organisation, so this event is also an opportunity to say thank you to all those who have been involved in the 80s, 90s and now.”
Ms Delamotte said over the past few years, the Kawana Chamber of Commerce had become renowned for delivering fun and relaxed business events and she expected the September soiree would be no exception.
“Our committee members are firm believers that business events can be informative and constructive without compromising on entertainment value, so we make every effort to regularly contribute educational, laidback and entertaining gatherings to the Sunshine Coast business calendar.”
“The strength of relationships with suppliers, clients and other businesspeople really does have the potential to make or break a business, so our aim is to make the process of building networks as stress-free as possible. Being in a comfortable and easygoing environment makes it that much easier for business owners and operators to engage closely with others and make new connections.”
Ms Delamotte said the 30-year anniversary event was not limited to past and present chamber members, with all local businesspeople and community members welcome to attend.
“Roll out the sunglasses, stonewashed jeans and cans of hairspray, because we’re going to party like it’s 1986!”
