King of the Mountain 2004

It's almost upon us again, the day when Pomona comes alive and gears up for the King of the Mountain Festival. July 25 is this years date although it is planned to have some events on Saturday July 24. This year is a very special year, it is the 25th year of continuous King of the Mountains. 1979 saw the first race organised by the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club, this inaugural race was won by George Fewtrell who also won the race for the next five years. In 1987 Graham Barralet took the race from George, Graham in turn had the title taken from him in 1988 by New Zealand's Barry Prosser. Graham and Barry fostered the Australia - New Zealand rivalry and over the next six years each winning three races. Graham Barralet created the race record in 1987 of 22min 50sec, this record still stands today. The Australia - New Zealand feud continued over the next four years by Mathew Kaluder and Aaron Strong both winning two races. Barry Prosser again showed his supremacy in 1999 and local boy Tony Smith became champion in 2000. Until 2000 the championship oscillated between the two countries nfortunately since 2000 New Zealand's Aaron Strong, Michael Wakelin and Chris Morrissey have shown their dominance.

Is 2004 going to be a recovery for Australia? Hopefully it will be, particularly in this our 25th anniversary year.
Incidentally, we are hopeful to get all of the past race winners to parade before the start of this years race.

In years gone by we had a two day event for the King of the Mountain Festival, the Saturday never proved to be a great success, however this year we decided to bring Saturday afternoon back into the festival. Our main activity on Saturday will be an orientation rally. This is a family car drive through the hinterland looking for clues or treasures, the occupants of the car who gets most of the clues correct is the winner and will receive an attractive prize. It's not just for cars, if you have a motorbike, you can enter also but we do draw the line at horse riders or camel riders. Whilst all these folks are away looking for clues back in Stan Topper Park we will be having some novelty events from past years such as 'nail driving', 'three legged race', 'egg throwing', etc.

The evening will see entertainment by 'The Tinpanakin'. Food and drink will be available throughout the afternoon and evening.

Sunday will start the day with the 3km and 10km fun runs at 7.30am. The Bush Poets will kick off at 8.00am and continue until 9.30am. This event is by ticket only so be early to get your tickets as the numbers are limited. As well as a good line-up of Bush Poets a very wholesome breakfast will be served. The cost has not yet been finalised but should be very nominal, about $7.

Tickets can be purchased from Pomona Engineering or Pomona Fruit & Vegie shop or book by ringing 54854125.

The ever popular Primary School Relays, sponsored by IGA Pomona, will start at 9.30am followed by prize giving at 11.00am. Hopefully we can get a record number of Schools participating this year. If your School has not entered a team then ask your sports teacher if you're School can enter a team, boys or girls.

Entertainment, partly sponsored by Pomona Hotel, throughout the day will be by 'Loose Ens', 'The Jazz Factory', 'Tinpanakin' and the 'Steve Wiese Duo'. The bar will be open from 10.00am and the food outlets will operate all day. Kay-Dee Promotions will again provide the rides and fun attractions. The snake man will have shows throughout the day showing the different types of snakes you may come across in our area and we will again have the 'Pig Racing'. The craft market will operate all day with many new and varied stalls this year.

The Mountain Challenge, this year sponsored by 'Mid Strength' will start at 3.00pm preceded by a parade of past winners and some of the past equipment used in the festival. All in all it should be a day packed with fun and entertainment for all ages.

As always it takes a lot of manpower to make this festival the success it has been over the years. We are always looking for helpers, so if you are able to assist on the day please let us know.
