The theme for Children’s Week 2012 (20-28 October) is “Celebrating Children – focus on the Right of the Child to Play” – in the National Year of Reading.

This year the Queensland Children’s Commissioner, Ms Elizabeth Fraser has gladly accepted the invitation to be State Ambassador for the week. There are other Ambassadors, including Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin, from Australia Zoo, who are family Ambassadors for the week.

Ms Fraser said, “Reading is one of the many ways children learn how to better understand the world around them.  This learning includes their relationships with other people and understanding, through situations highlighted in story books, about decision making and problem solving and consequences through the choice’s the book characters make.”

Research referenced in the Commission’s recent publication, Snapshot 2012 indicates that the majority of Queensland parents regularly engage with their children in informal learning opportunities, such as reading from a book, telling stories or listening to their child read. At least 96% of parents do these activities with their 3 to 8 year old children at least once a week and 48% do so every day.

“It is great that Queensland parents are making the time to read regularly to their children.  I strongly urge older children to continue to develop lifelong relationships with books as part of keeping their imaginations alive and knowledge of the world vibrant”, Ms Fraser said.

The full Snapshot 2012 report which tells how all Queensland children are faring across areas including education and health, can be found at the Commission’s website at http://www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au/

The week is celebrated across Queensland with many regional communities marking the importance of play and literacy with local events.  These range from storytelling, to arts and crafts and other activities designed to work with children’s natural gift of creativity and their love of a great story.
