OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTER, DAMIAN BROWN LENDS HIS SUPPORT TO NATIONAL ROAD CYCLING CHAMPS.
As part of the ongoing program to educate our youth about drugs in sport the Australian Olympic Committee and Cycling Australia have announced three time Olympian weightlifter Damian Brown will present their "Live Clean, Play Clean" program on Friday 3 September at Caloundra RSL.
Brown competed at the Olympics in Barcelona ('92), Atlanta ('96) and Sydney ('00) and has represented Australian at four Commonwealth Games picking up four Gold, a Silver and three Bronze medals and was our flag bearer in Manchester 2002.
Brown is just as passionate now as when he first started competing about the use of drugs by athletes not just in weightlifting but any sport.
"Athletes using drugs have been a constant source of disappointment, heartache and frustration and my greatest regret in sport. I believe the use of drugs by athletes against me has robbed me in many significant ways like not having a realistic opportunity to become a World Champion."
He always knew he wanted to go the Olympics from age 10 after watching the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Brown started weightlifting at age 14, in 1984, making his first international junior team in 1988 at age 18 and first Commonwealth Games Team in 1990 and never missed an Olympics, Commonwealth Games or World Championships after this.
Brown's appointments include Chairman AOC Athletes Commission and AOC Executive Board Member.
Now running a successful business in Melbourne Brown will turn his focus to making the next Commonwealth Games in his hometown.
"Elite athletes and sporting organisations have a responsibility to educate our sporting youth on related issues and reinforce the Live Clean Play Clean message."
The program is open to anyone who is interested, athletes, family, sporting bodies and we encourage everyone to come along. It is a free evening from 6:30pm - 7:30pm, Friday 3 September at Caloundra RSL.
The National Road Cycling Championships kicks off in Caloundra on Friday 3 September with the National Junior Road Cycling Championships incorporating Under 15 and Under 17 age groups and will run until Sunday 12 September.
