18 November 2005 Councils join forces to plan for shared districts
Maroochy Shire Council will join forces with Caloundra City Council this Tuesday, November 22 at a special meeting to discuss the Local Growth Management Strategies (LGMS) of the two districts.
In order to implement the State Government's South East Queensland Regional Plan at a local level, councils are required to prepare individual Local Growth Management Strategies to demonstrate how they propose to plan for the expected growth and change of a region until the year 2026.
Both Maroochy Shire and Caloundra City Councils have commenced LGMS preparation but are at different phases of that process and with areas such as Sippy Downs and Palmview laying either side of the local government boundary, they are being flagged as key areas for both Shires.
"Areas like these fall into a unique category of their own and special consideration needs to be given to ensure a collaborative approach to planning and infrastructure delivery is achieved," Cr Natoli said.
While both Councils have different timeframes for the completion of their Local Growth Management Strategy, an early effort to develop a partnership between the Maroochy Shire and Caloundra City will enable planning for these areas to be integrated and successfully coordinated.
Caloundra City Mayor Don Aldous said collaboration between Councils is the way forward for the region.
"Residents living on shared boundaries shouldn't be disadvantaged by planning just because there is an invisible line separating them from their neighbours," Cr Aldous said.
"This is a forward thinking approach and should ensure developments in these border areas go ahead smoothly and maintain consistency throughout the area."
Media and the members of the public are welcome to attend this event being held at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Tuesday 22 November at 9am.
