Coonowrin Finger Limes farm is located in the Glass House Mountains - not surprisingly with a view to Mount Coonowrin or Crookneck as it is called locally! Moving from WA - Tracy, children's services and Gerald, logistics manager made a life changing decision to return to Queensland and purchase a farm. When deciding what to plant on their land, having always been interested in bush tucker, they say that Finger Limes were an obvious choice.
Conditions would be in their favour as Finger Limes happen to be native to SE Qld and also northern NSW, with around 80 varieties in the wild.
Their local fruit shops have been a great support, continually selling out of Finger Limes and generating more and more interest in the process. As the farm grows they will be able to supply more fruit shops in the sunshine coast region, as their aim is to remain local.
Tracy is passionate about finger limes and loves any opportunity to share their natural beauty! They're called 'rainforest caviar' and it's easy to see why. These perfectly formed beads of wild lime are sought after by chefs everywhere. In major restaurants, primarily used with oysters and seafood as well as Thai Salads, these little gems are also great in a champagne cocktail - giving a lava lamp effect!
Finger limes have a dark, thin skin and grow on a thorny bush. Once open, the little beads, or vesicles, of the fruit are squeezed out but there is little or no juice. The flavours and acidity varies from fruit to fruit. One variety has a very herby flavour and goes well with savoury snacks like cheese. Another variety is sweeter, while another is tart and acidic. They look like a desert plant but they do take an awful lot of water.
Currently, the farm has 170 trees, comprising three varieties with plans to increase in the future also adding passion fruit back to their produce
