Maitreya Loving Kindness Relic Tour A precious collection of sacred relics of the Buddha and many other Buddhist masters is currently touring the world, and will be on display at Chenrezig Institute on the Sunshine Coast on the weekend of the 1st-2nd March 2014. The ancient relics are produced by Buddhist masters at the time of death and resemble small, pearl-like crystals.
The collection includes relics of the historical Buddha and the Buddha’s closest disciples as well as many other well-known Buddhist masters from many traditions. The relics are believed to embody the enlightened compassion and wisdom of the buddhas and bodhisattvas, and to bring great benefit to those who come into contact with them. Visitors often report experiences of inspiration and healing when in the presence of the relics. While some are inspired to pray for world peace and to develop their inner wisdom, others are overcome by emotion as the powerful effects of the relics open their hearts to compassion and loving-kindness.
"Being at the relics show is a feeling like coming home... there is peace, perceptible peace in the exhibition hall, and peace grows in our hearts while we are there..." (Visitor to the Maitreya Heart Shrine Tour) This is an incredibly special opportunity to see the Maitreya Loving Kindness Relics on the Sunshine Coast, and to be blessed by them, or to simply sit and enjoy the atmosphere in the beautiful surroundings of one of the oldest Buddhist Centres in the Western world. All visitors may participate in a Blessing Ceremony where the relics of the Buddha are gently placed on the crown of the visitor’s head. Visitors are also welcome to bring small pets to be blessed by these holy relics.
People of all faiths and creeds are invited to visit the relics in a spirit of interfaith respect and compassion. The relic tour will commence with an opening ceremony on Friday evening. Everyone is invited to come along to hear a bit about the history of the relic tour and the importance of the relics themselves. The relics will then be on display all day Saturday and Sunday. The tour will finish on Sunday with a Shakyamuni Buddha puja (a Buddhist prayer ceremony involving chanting and mantra recitation) led by the nuns and monks of the Chenrezig Institute community.
Everyone welcome. Entrance is free of charge. According to Buddhist scriptures, Maitreya will be the next Buddha to bring teachings of loving-kindness to the world. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has offered eight Relics of the Buddha to the collection: “The very name ‘Maitri’, that’s loving-kindness. Now in today's world, we really need the promotion of Maitreya, Maitri, loving-kindness.” – His Holiness the Dalai Lama
