FROM MOZARET TO MENOTTI
SATURDAY 1ST OF APRIL
3pm AT BRAESIDE B&B
305 Stanley River Rd - MALENY
Spiros Rantos and Brachi Tilles will take you on a musical trip through the ages and styles. They start at the court of the Sun King with the sonata by the virtuoso 17th century violinist J. M. Leclair. Then the trip takes you through Bohemia, Russia, Greece and Romania, all cultures where the violin is a protagonist of music making.
Nicholas Kaye-Smith despite his young age (12) has achieved remarkable records in his violin playing. He has won most first prizes for two years running in competitions and Eisteddfodau in and around Brisbane. Obtained his A.Mus.A with highest honours in 2005 and won the AMEB prize for outstanding performance in 2006. He performs Kreisler's charming Tambourin Chinols and excerpts from Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy based on themes of the opera by Bizet. Nicholas and Spiros join forces to perform Sarasate's Navara for two violins, a piece combining Mediterranean charm, Spanish passion and daring violin Acrobatics.
A truly entertaining event for Saturday afternoon.
SUNDAY 2nd OF APRIL 2006
10am AT MALCOLM'S MALENY RESTAURANT
COFFE, CAKE and CLASSICS
Spiros, Brachi Tilles, Glenn Murray, Robert Harris and Dorit Herskovits in a programme of Viennese Music, Mozart, Lanner, Strauss etc. - a little like the Vienna's Philharmonic's Annual 11am New Year's Day Concert.
3pm AT MONTVILLE VILLAGE HALL
MOZART to MENOTTI
To celebrate Mozart's 250th birthday the entire first half of this program is dedicated to the music of this most extraordinary genius from Salzburg. Soprano Eleanor Varnes and Bariton Mark Jowett are joined by Bass Brett Holland in a presentation of arias with an interlude of Mozart's most favourite Sonata in Bb major performed by Spiros Rantos and Brachi Tilles.
The second half of the afternoon transfers us to a different set-up. We are in the middle of the 20th century: the mood is set with music by Jose Bragato (Piazolla's closest friend and collaborator), the magic of Poulenc and Kurt Well'sa ever popular "September Song". The way for Menotti's comic opera is now laid down. The longest running opera in Broadway of the mid forties, "The Telephone", is a satire on the effect that technology has over people. This one act comedy is an evergreen gem still performing around the world's stages.
