Rehearsals are now under way for Maleny Players production ‘Billy Goes to War’, which commemorates the Centenary of WW1. This deeply moving and inspiring play will be presented at The Events Centre this March.
The play tells the story of Australia’s involvement in the War from the point of view of a Queensland family whose two sons, Billy and Tom Smith, join up and go to fight. It also tells of their aunt Olive who becomes a nurse and sees action on the Western Front. The play
contains authentic letters written from the Front and other material donated by local families.
Local playwright, David Crewe said “The production contains songs of the time, but does not glorify war; in fact it underlines the tragedy and horror of the battlefront and the impact of the losses at home.”
“We are now into rehearsals with a cast of more than 30 people – civilians, soldiers, nurses as well as actors representing the warring countries. We are of course including a number of traditional wartime songs and we are delighted to have the involvement of the Buderim
Concert Band providing live accompaniment to the production.”
The show was first staged in Maleny last year, and was so well-received that the Players decided to bring it to The Events Centre, Caloundra. Don’t miss this heartwarming play suitable for all ages.
