Two Tewantin Noosa RSL workmates, Lynn McClelland (Murph) & Rachel Jarvis, are taking on the arduous Mates4Mates Kokoda nine day, 90km adventure challenge. Sponsored by Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub-branch, these two intrepid adventurers are also raising funds through a Trivia Night at the RSL on Sunday 19 January.
Lynn and Rachel are well into their compulsory 12 week physical training program which is required to be completed prior to the challenge.
The Mates4Mates adventure challenges are designed to stretch participants both physically and psychologically in an environment which has positive aspects such as posing a challenge and motivation and building teamwork and trust, as well as addressing negative facets such as fear, risk, hardship and uncertainty. Their programs are unique as they involve the wounded, injured and ill current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force personnel and their families and supporters. Lynne and Rachel see this as an opportunity to be involved and be inspired while also assisting those that have been injured to rebuild their lives.
The 90 kilometre trek follows the trail used during World War II, taking in mountain passes, snaking along ridges and descending into deep gullies. . Along the way the trekkers will visit small, isolated villages, war sites, ancient forests and extinct volcanic craters. They will explore the complete route of the campaign starting from the village of Kokoda and eventually working their way to Owers’ Corner walking in the footsteps of Australian troops, receiving military history briefings and being part of services at Kokoda, Isurava Memorial, Brigade Hill and Owers’ Corner.
“We are really looking forward to walking in the footsteps of our forefathers and learning what they endured which will turn a mentally and physically challenging trek into an emotional journey as well. We have so much respect for the Tewantin Noosa RSL sub-branch members and we want to do the track for them,” said Lynn McClelland.
If you’d like to support Mates4Mates and Lynn & Rachel’s Kokoda Challenge, join the Mates4Mates Trivia night on Sunday 19 January from 7pm in the South Bar. Entry is $10 per person and as well as supporting a great cause there will also be lots of fun and giveaways.
