Wednesday 9 November 2005 Meet a bilby at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve
Meet one of Australia's living treasures at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve this month.
One of our national icons - the bilby, will be on display on Saturday November 26 as part of an awareness campaign for the Save the Bilby Fund.
Bilbies, with their long noses and huge ears, have warmed their way into the hearts of Australians, after becoming a national symbol of Easter, in place of the globally renowned Easter bunny.
A member of the bandicoot family, these cute creatures were once common throughout 70 per cent of Australia. Since European settlement bilby numbers have dwindled and they are now only found in pockets of Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. The Queensland population is estimated at about 700 and the bilby is listed as endangered in this state.
Frank Manthey, from Save the Bilby Fund, has successfully raised the public profile and awareness of the bilby and other threatened marsupials and his efforts this year led to the launch of National Bilby Day on the second Sunday of each September. More information can be found on the bilby website at www.savethebilbyfund.com.
The bilbies will be on display at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve on Saturday November 26 at 10.30am. Frank will be on hand to talk about these rare creatures and show them off. A $4 charge per person will go to the Save the Bilby Fund. Children under 12 are free.
