GetUp! Climate Torch comes to Mary River
In what is shaping up to be the biggest event yet in the campaign to Save the Mary River the GetUp Climate Torch will travel the length of the river from the source at Maleny to Hervey Bay via the River Heads between the 5 - 7 September.
The Climate Torch, designed by the creators of the Sydney Olympic torch, features a solar panel and wind turbines and will travel from Maleny to Hervey Bay in a series of community events on the 6th and 7th of September.
GetUp is a non-partisan political pressure group. GetUp organisers send emails to over 280,000 subscribers inviting them to participate in campaigns focused on environment and social justice issues.
"Their involvement demonstrates that concern about the carbon emissions and reliability of rain-fed water storages worry people around Australia, not just here in South-East Queensland" said Chairman of the Save the Mary River Coordinating Group, Mr Kevin Ingersole.
"Concern about the carbon footprint of the proposed Traveston Crossing dam is now so great that GetUp Australia, an independent lobby group, are involved in our campaign to Save the Mary River" said Mr Ingersole.
GetUp will feature the Mary River as a key destination in their upcoming Climate Torch Relay across Australia.
"The torch is a challenge to our representatives at all levels - from local councilors to the Prime Minister - to halve Australia's greenhouse emissions in a decade" said GetUp! Executive Director Brett Solomon, "they ignore that challenge at their electoral peril".
