Senior students from two Sunshine Coast high schools will join forces next week to host an open-air movie night as part of a local youth initiative from the Buderim Foundation.

On Friday 27 July, budding philanthropists from Matthew Flinders Anglican College and Sunshine Coast Grammar School will present Disney’s Academy Award-winning film Moana as part of the Community Youth Movie Night.

Starting at 4.30pm at the Buderim Mountain State School oval, the Movie Night will have family friendly activities including face painting, sack races, prizes for best dressed, popcorn, sausage sizzle, lolly bags and a coffee van to enjoy before the film starts at sundown (5.30pm).

Moana is a heart-warming G-rated animated film suitable for all ages and tells the tale of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a Polynesian chief who enlists the help of demigod Maui (voiced by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson) after she is chosen by the ocean to reunite a mystical relic with a goddess in order to save her people.

The Movie Night follows the success, earlier this year, of the second annual Buderim Foundation Youth Summit, part of the Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Project, an extension of a recently established Youth Sub-fund, developed to provide grants specifically for programs benefiting young people.

Six local school groups were successful in their applications to provide support to schools in Cambodia and the Gulf of Carpentaria, members of Team Adem and numerous retirement and aged care facilities in the Sippy Downs area.

Buderim Foundation Youth Committee chair, Graham Tamblyn said the Youth Philanthropy Project aims to introduce the concept of philanthropy and its value to the community to young people, inspiring them to adopt it throughout their lives.

“Philanthropy is vitally important and the Youth in Philanthropy Project will see the students learn more about the concept of philanthropy, why it’s important to society and the power giving can have,” Mr Tamblyn said.

“We also want them to work directly with the Buderim Foundation, which aims to enrich and enhance the quality of life for Buderim and its residents by generating income from donations and bequests and providing grants for worthwhile community projects.”

At next week’s Community Youth Movie Night there will be the chance to meet members of the Buderim Foundation, one of the top four regional Philanthropic Community Foundations in Australia, as well as the students involved to learn more about the community work supported by the organisation.
