Workshop helps parents become better teachers
Noosa Library Service has launched a new workshop series offering parents advice and skills to give their kids a language and literacy head start.
The library is delivering the First 5 Forever workshops with state government funding, for parents of 0 to 5-year-olds.
The first of three workshops is on next Tuesday, 10 November, from 6pm at Noosaville Library.
The More Talk, Less Screen Time workshop explores oral language development, offering practical tips for replacing kids' TV viewing time with reading and family conversation.
The What's the Hurry? workshop on 7 December looks at incorporating time for talking, singing, playing, reading and interacting with others into children's routines, to ready them for prep.
"The workshop series also includes a skills development session specifically for educators," says Noosa Library Service Young People's Services Librarian Maureen O'Shea.
"It delves into brain science, personality types, child development and literacy practices to provide greater insight into what can and can't be expected from young children," Ms O'Shea says.
Council is delivering the workshops in partnership with Early Life Foundations - an independent consultancy that has developed a national and international reputation for high quality support and guidance for organisations, schools and families across Australia.
"Noosa Library Service already offers interactive storytelling sessions, which provide playful early literacy experiences and group interactions for toddlers and preschool children," says Ms O'Shea. "These workshops are another way the library support parents, carers, and wider family members take an active role in their children's journey of learning."
First 5 Forever is a state government funded family literacy program aimed at developing stronger language and literacy environments for young children from 0 to 5 years and their families.
