It's 1990. A small boat comes to land in a remote area of Western Australia, carrying a dozen refugees from Cambodia and Iraq. 'Welcome to paradise,' the Indonesian captain announces, before dumping his passengers on the shimmering white sands, where they're supposed to wait for a bus that clearly will never arrive. Desperate as the situation seems, its comic possibilities immediately become apparent. From the point of view of the new arrivals, Australia might as well be a desert island (which, of course, it is). As the characters go their separate ways three main subplots emerge.
First and foremost, there are the Robinson Crusoe adventures of an ill-assorted trio who meet in the bush: Arun, Youssif, and the malicious Ramelan (Srisacd Sacdpraseuth), an Indonesian sailor who flees after inadvertently sinking the boat that brought them all to shore. Dogging their tracks is another trio - a gang of lackadaisical army reservists in a noisy four-wheel drive, who are introduced kicking around a football and listening to reggae. There are also the remaining two Indonesian sailors, Mulak (Sawung Jabo) and his offsider Abdu (Arif Hidayat), whose bickering on the beach fills in some background about how the journey to Australia occurred. Lucy Miles is a comedy with a life-or-death twist.
