Mr Bailey's Minder by Debra Oswald
Winner of the 2004 Griffin Award for a New Play

"This is life-enhancing, wildly funny, wonderfully entertaining and you'll have a bit of a cry too."
Sunday Telegraph

Is artistic genius an excuse to act like a bastard?

Leo Bailey is Australia's greatest living artist and a rude old drunk, his brain burned out by booze.  He lives in a fabulous paint-spattered hovel, built into a cliff overlooking Sydney harbour.  Of his five ex-wives and innumerable children, only eldest daughter Margo ever comes near him.  Embattled but resilient, she's employed a succession of live-in carers, all of whom have been sent packing by Leo's vicious tongue and wild antics.

Then along comes Therese, not long out of jail and down on her options.  She takes the job as Leo's minder and digs in, determined to make a go of it.  Together they negotiate an odd friendship that develops with Karl, a carpenter sent to remove a valuable mural.

As the vultures circle and the house disintegrates, discoveries are made about how we judge and exploit each other.  Mr Bailey's Minder is a story of shame, letting go and forgiveness.

Debra Oswald is one of Australia's leading writers.  Her plays include Gary's House, Sweet Road (both short listed for the NSW Premier's Award), Dags and Skate, Oswald has written seven children's books and television scripts ranging from Police Rescue and Bananas in Pyjamas to the Secret Life of Us.

'There is so much emotional truth here and the small triumphs of these characters are
so hard won that the result is inspirational."
