Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson and Police Minister Neil Roberts will join with the Queensland community during National Police Remembrance Day next week to honour Queensland Police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Members of the Queensland Police Service, family, friends and the community will pay their respects to the fallen by attending candlelight vigils, marches and memorial services.

Mr Roberts said Police Remembrance Day paid tribute to the 139 officers who had lost their lives, as well as recognising the bravery and commitment of past, present and future officers.

"This year National Police Remembrance Day will be have an even greater meaning, as in the past 12 months the QPS has mourned the tragic loss of Sergeant Daniel Stiller and Detective Senior Constable Damian Leeding," Mr Roberts said.

"It is important for us to remember the dedication and courage that these two fine officers displayed and to understand t hat there are very real dangers in all areas of policing."

"Every police officer swears an oath to protect and serve the people of Queensland.

"Unfortunately the protection of our rights and freedom is not without risk and no matter how well trained or equipped an officer may be, sadly there will be times when a life may be lost."

"We must also take care to remember the sacrifice was not only limited to those who gave their lives, but it was a sacrifice made by their family and friends as well."

"I ask the community to join with the QPS in remembering these officers and their families, who are sadly among the 139 officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1861."

Commissioner Atkinson said police officers often worked in difficult and dangerous circumstances.

"It is not possible however to provide for the safety and security of the Community without at times officers putting their own safety at risk" he said.

"A police officer's job is also one where they experience the best and worst of humanity, across all areas of this diverse State," Commissioner Atkinson said.

"Since last year's ceremony, all of us in the Service and the extended Police family have been deeply saddened by the two deaths on duty within the QPS and the impact this will continue to have on their young families.

"During these sad incidents, we saw and are very grateful for the great support from the Queensland community."

This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the tragic death of Senior Constable David Shean.

Senior Constable Shean was a community-minded, vigilant and well-respected member of the South Brisbane Traffic Branch. At the age of 48, the husband and father of four died as a result of injuries sustained when his service motorcycle collided with a truck at Eight Mile Plains as he responded to a crime in progress.

Blue ribbons are available from any police station for a small donation and the proceeds will go towards charities, Queensland Police Legacy and Community Supporting Police.
