National Tree Day

For every hour we spend on outdoor recreational activity, we spend seven watching television and surfing the Internet. That's one finding from the 2013 Planet Ark report 'Missing trees: The inside story of an outdoor nation'.

Council is inviting residents to buck that trend, get outside and connect with nature during two community planting days it will host Sunday July 27 for National Tree Day.

Everyone is welcome to attend and should bring water, a hat and sunscreen. Event locations are Marcoola and Little Mountain and will run from 8.30-11am.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said for the Marcoola planting, council had teamed up with Coolum District Coast Care whose dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly to protect the dunes and foreshores.

"When the coastline gets hammered during bad weather, it's those plucky dunes standing tough, protecting us from the sea," Cr McKay said

"We'll be aiming to improve the dunes' ability to withstand those big weather events as well as enhance their habitat values.

"At Little Mountain, we'll be planting Wallum species in Bancroft's Red Gum Bush Reserve, the main National Tree Day site for the southern end of the Coast.

"How much we achieve on Sunday will really come down to people power. Every single tree planted will make a difference—so I'd urge everyone to grab their friends and families and head down to dig in."

Each year more than 200,000 people take part in National Tree Day events at 3,000 sites organised by councils, schools, businesses, communities and Toyota Dealers across the country.

Since Planet Ark launched National Tree Day in 1996, more than three million participants have planted 20 million native trees, shrubs and grasses.
