NPA Friday Environmental Forum
All are welcome to attend this weekly forum, no membership is required. It is held at the Environment Centre, Wallace Park, Noosaville from 10.30am commencing with reporting and presentations about interpretive birding sightings, butterflies, flora and fauna and topical environmental news or issues. This is followed, generally by a guest speaker from 11.15am - 12.15pm approximately, although Open Forum meetings at the beginning of each month, may not necessarily feature a guest speaker. Bird Observers start the morning with Interpretive Birding at 8.30am and morning coffee is available for everyone from 10am.
Last week featured Dr Scott Burnett who kept a full house enthralled with his superb presentation on cassowaries. If you were unable to attend, you missed an environmental treat. Do watch out for his next presentation. Once again, with the story of cassowaries of Northern Queensland, we were reminded how vital each component of nature is within eco-systems, and to the whole of the rest of the environment . Naturalist, John Muir's words have never been truer -"When one tugs at a single thing in nature, one finds it attached to the rest of the world" (Muir, J. 1838 - 1914)
This week, August 29th, features Ben McMullen, Manager Environmental Services, North, Sunshine Coast Regional Council, who will give an update of the latest information about the Noosa Biosphere and its background.
During National Weedbusters Week, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council initiative for this area, will take place this week at the Environment Centre, Wallace Park. It offers a chance to swap a bagful of weeds with healthy, native plants (3x per household), and to discover more information about the damage caused to local wildlife and the environment by introduced species of flora and weeds, and the huge benefits of replacing with native species instead. The range of options is much broader than most people would think - ideas will be given about the native species that can reasonably be substituted for the more traditionally used non-native, garden varieties. Weedbusters will take place from Monday 1st September, 9 - 1 am; then Wednesday - Friday from 10 - 2pm. Please support this creative initiative and encourage friends and neighbours to take up this opportunity.
