Nature of Noosa exhibition revisits holiday memories of Noosa 8 November 2005
The Nature of Noosa project will present an exhibition of historic postcards, vintage cameras and other memorabilia at the Noosa Library in Wallace Park, Noosaville, from Monday 12 December 2005 to Saturday 14 January 2006.
Members of the public are invited to view this exhibition at their leisure and rediscover Noosa's history through the eyes of both postcard photographers and holidaymakers of the past 100 years.
Items on display will include some of the earliest postcards of Noosa Shire, such as black-and-white and hand coloured versions of Hell's Gate taken in 1895 showing an Aboriginal man and a white fisherman on the rock platform. These postcards also feature pre-Federation Queensland penny stamps.
A range of vintage cameras, from early 20th century autographic models to the hand-held "box brownie", will reveal how postcards were produced by companies from Murray Views of Gympie to Steve Parrish of Brisbane.
Photographers such as Brisbane's Jack William Fegan, Bernard Kuskopf of Woombye and J.G. Monks of Noosa, produced a prolific range of postcards of Noosa as it changed and grew over the decades. Meanwhile, generations of visiting families who kept returning to Noosa for their holidays also kept albums of snapshots of holiday scenes and of people and places that have since disappeared from the area.
School students from across Noosa Shire will also be invited to participate in a postcard design competition that shows Noosa as it is from the next generation's perspective and how postcards of Noosa could appeal to visitors and souvenir collectors. A variety of sponsors are offering prizes for the best postcard designs received.
Curated by Fiona Mohr, Museum Development Officer, and Anne-Maree Fewtrell, Production Manager, Nature of Noosa project, this exhibition displays rare items on loan from a variety of private collections as well as Noosa Library's local studies collection.
