Nippers & Lifesaving at Peregian Super Sunday!

Plans to revive a nipper’s program at Peregian Beach will hit full swing at this weekend’s ‘Super Sunday’, with hundreds of local families expected to turn out and sign up. The event reinforces the desire of Peregian residents to not only ensure the volunteer lifesaving support of Noosa Heads SLSC (NHSLSC) continues, but to reintroduce a nipper program at Peregian this season. Members will be able to enjoy the benefits of going to Peregian Beach, or Noosa Main Beach, or both, under the same membership.
NHSLSC is responsible for operating volunteer lifesaving services at Peregian Beach and along with Peregian Family and Friends Association, have organised a ‘Super Sunday’ this August 12 from 10am to 12pm at the Peregian Beach Club House.
Noosa Heads SLSC President Ross Fisher said more than 200 local families have already registered to attend the event, where they will learn more about Surf Life Saving and will have the opportunity to become involved and join up as a nipper or a Lifesaver.
“A rescue demonstration by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter is also planned which the kids will love, while it also shows first-hand the type of activities that our volunteers may be involved in on a day to day basis,” Mr Fisher said.
Kane Livingstone, spokesperson for Peregian Family and Friends, the community organisation which conducted the recent community survey about the value of Life Saving to Peregian residents and holiday makers, commented on the great support shown at the first of the season’s fundraising events held at Peregian Beach Markets. “We raised over $700 for Nippers @ Peregian and lots of children and parents collected leaflets on how to sign up. There was also a lot of enthusiasm about attending the Super Sunday on August 12th.”
“We are thrilled to have local Ironwomen and Ironmen legends including Australian champion Lana Rogers, Jordan and Darren Mercer attend, to share their stories with our locals about their experience as lifesavers. The Hot 91 breakfast crew will be there too!”
Peregian Junior Activities Coordinator Lyndon Forlonge said the popularity of new residential areas like Peregian Springs ensures there should be plenty of families keen to join the nippers and lifesaving programs.
“We’ve been out and about doing presentations in schools and other community groups and we hope to build upon the current level of seven full lifesaving patrols up to the ideal number of 12 patrols at Peregian Beach. The numbers so far in terms of registrations and interest in attending Super Sunday are really encouraging.
“There are over 2,500 children attending schools in Peregian, we also have many parents who are keen to get on the beach and support both the lifesaving and nipper programs. There’s lots of ways to get involved and best of all it teaches our next generation the importance of beach safety and contributing back to the community,” Mr Forlonge said.
