February 20 2009 No Place Like Home
Sunshine Coast Council is joining forces with state and federal government agencies and local community groups in a workshop next week addressing the growing problem of homelessness.
No Place Like Home, a workshop hosted by council's Community Services department, will focus on improving services for homeless people on Monday 23 February at Palmwoods Memorial Hall from 9am to 3pm.
Council's Community Policy and Programs Portfolio holder, Councillor Jenny McKay said the workshop provided an important way to address problems related to homelessness on the Sunshine Coast.
"Homelessness affects people from all levels of society and is a growing problem in this current economic crisis," Cr McKay said.
"A strong response to the workshop has been received with 100 people confirmed to attend and focused on achieving practical outcomes for people facing homelessness."
Councillors Jenny McKay, Paul Tatton and Anna Grosskreutz will be taking part in the workshop together with representatives from the Department of Communities, Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, and local welfare groups.
The workshop was born out of welfare organisation meetings and was created just before the federal government released its White Paper The Road Home with its goal of reducing homelessness by 50% by 2020. Workshop participants will be discussing the white paper and ways to implement local steps towards achieving it.
"Attendees will hear the personal story of Jilly Shepley as well as presentations from the Federal Government on The Road Home and the Director of the Office of Homelessness," Cr McKay said. "Valuable input from organisations such as the Micah Projects, the Sunshine Coast Housing Company, Interact and SCOPE will also be heard."
