02 May 2008 NOOSA FARMERS MARKET GOES NATIONAL
THE Sunshine Coast's position at the forefront of the push to "grow local and buy local" gets a boost this month with the Noosa Farmers Markets featuring on a national TV program.
The weekly market linking farmers directly to buyers goes to air on Mercurio's Menu, a culinary television program hosted by celebrity Paul Mercurio.
The segment, filmed last month at the Noosa Farmers Markets, goes to air in Sydney on May 4 with scheduling in other states to follow. The show focuses on the experience of growing, sourcing and cooking with fresh local produce.
Market manager Shane Stanley said the program taps into the national shift in consciousness towards more sustainable consumer habits.
Global food and fuel shortages and increasing food costs are well-documented facts which are eventually going to force us all to grow and buy local,'' Mr Stanley said.
We're currently working to draw together a range of people and organisations committed to the goal of making the Sunshine Coast a food-independent region.''
Crowds at the weekly Sunday farmers market in Noosa and The Big Pineapple are proof that we crave closer connection to the source of our produce. The interest in permaculture gardens at Yandina, Peregian and the edible gardens in schools program is really picking up.''
The UN's Food and Agricultural Organisation chief Jacques Diouf this week called on all governments to protect their agricultural land and boost food production.
In a recent policy statement, Mayor Bob Abbot acknowledged the need and committed to helping create a new business cluster linking growers, retailers, produce agents and farmers markets.
Mr Stanley said a renewed focus on local agriculture would help keep rural lands growing food not residential estates.
This is a huge issue that government across the world are trying to come to grips with. It's not easy, but I'm confident we can lead the way here.''
