Noosa residents from all walks of life are encouraged to volunteer their acting skills for CQUniversity’s Simulated Patient Program, arranged by the School of Nursing.

No prior experience is necessary as CQUniversity is arranging a volunteer information session on  Tuesday 20 June.

CQUniversity Clinical Learning Centre Supervisor, Cath Haug says participants at the volunteer information session can discuss their roles, expectations, costumes, makeup, feedback and debriefing.

“Our community actors are then given a character to suit them and a specific scenario to act out, to provide a real-life experience for our third-year students during their Residential School in July,” Ms Haug says.

“The Simulated Patient is an actor, recruited from the community to portray a patient, realistically and consistently within a safe learning environment, and without harming real patients.

“The actors (or SPs) are volunteers for the university who attend coaching and information sessions prior to their simulated patient activities.

“The benefits of SPs include repetition of a scenario, equity for student learning and the ability to provide training in specialised and sensitive areas before students are in a real-life situation.

“There are no particular qualifications to become an SP. The University requires people from all walks of life, across the adult age ranges and from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds (with the exclusion of nursing students).

“Men and women who have volunteered in this area find it rewarding, gain knowledge, and improve their own self-esteem and confidence.

“SPs are a supportive group of colleagues whose commitment can greatly improve student interpersonal communication and skills, for better long term outcomes for all patients.”
