Title: Rating: (MA)
Director: Richard Eyre
Cast: Judi Dench, Cate Blanchett, Bill Nighy, Andrew Simpson
The 'notes' are those written by lonely, acerbic schoolteacher, Barbara Covett (Judi Dench) into her diary, in which she denigrates her fellow teachers and the pupils she obviously despises. Distancing herself from most of those around her with an air of superiority, she has few kind words for anyone. Her initial observations of newly arrived art teacher, Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett) carry much the same belittling tone, but Barbara also begins to convince herself that in Sheba she has found "the one I've waited for."
Notes on a Scandal examines the friendship between the two women that develops after Barbara intervenes to help an ineffectual Sheba break up a fight between two schoolboys.
Barbara's opportunity to dominate and take control of the friendship comes when she witnesses Sheba in a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old schoolboy. Barbara confronts Sheba and tells her she won't report the incident but she must end the affair. When Barbara discovers that Sheba has continued the affair, her hold over her is complete with disastrous consequences for both.
