Each of the three finalist plays from the National Playwriting Competition feature in the 2019 One Act Play Festival, bringing a rich and deliciously diverse and theatrical offering.
Opens this week - don't miss it!
This year’s line up includes:
Little Angels by Yvette Wall from Floreat in W.A
Directed by Jacqui Mata-Luque
This play is set in the 60’s in a catholic home for un-married mothers. It reflects the differing attitudes of the nuns regarding teenage mothers and highlights the so-called ‘care’ the girls endured during this pivotal time in their lives.
A Very Messy Engagement by Rob Selzer from Melbourne, VIC
Directed by Jane Rivers
This is a comedy involving a ‘couple therapist’ who favours Hawaiian shirts and big cigars. When he discovers his son is engaged to God’s gift of a daughter-in-law he is over the moon. But when a new patient confides that she intends to marry a much younger man, it dawns on the therapist that his engaged son could be that very man. He pulls out all stops to keep his patient in her marriage and his son on track – with hilarious results. But is the son her lover???
Black Matter by Bruce Olive from Buderim, QLD
Directed by John McMahon
This play explores the life and struggles of an ex footballer who played in a time, not too long ago, when a head knock was considered just part of the game. The consequences of too many of these knocks are played out in a strong and poignant family drama.
These plays may contain Coarse Language and Adult Themes
Since 1978, Noosa Arts Theatre has been running the National One-Act Playwriting Competition. With The Nimmo Prize for Best Play ($5,000), it attracts entries from playwrights throughout Australia, and many other countries. Scripts are judged anonymously by a professional panel of three industry experts. The three finalists are selected on the quality of the writing, not on subject matter; and the winning order is decided before the plays are presented in this Festival.
During the Festival, the audience is asked at each performance to vote for the ‘Nancy Cato Audience Choice Award’. Presentation of awards takes place after the final performance.
Noosa Arts Theatre is proud to offer this rather unique opportunity to aspiring and established playwrights and showcase the finalists as part of the Noosa Alive Festival.
