Stars come out to play at Noosa on November 26 - David Williamson's 'One Night in Emerald City'

TICKETS ON SALE MONDAY! (01 Nov 2010)

On November 26, some of Australia's most respected thespians and celebrities will find themselves in Noosa Heads performing a one-night-only reading of David Williamson's 1987 classic play Emerald City.

The Noosa performance, a fundraiser for the 2011, 10-day Noosa Longweekend Festival will feature a slightly adapted script which, in David's own words, "heads in a more scurrilous direction." It will be only the second time that the adaptation, coined One night in Emerald City will play to audiences after having been staged in Sydney earlier this year.

The plot, which is just as relevant today as it was in the 80s, follows Melbourne playwright, Colin moving to Sydney and being exposed to the dark side of this 'Emerald City' replete with pompous politicians, corrupt councils, sensationalist media representatives and dodgy developers. Much like the legendary city which appears in Lyman Frank Baum's famous novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Emerald City is a satirical allegory for money, real estate, politics and power.

The star-studded cast list includes Robyn Nevin, Felix Williamson, Ita Buttrose, Lucy Bell, Daniel MacPherson, Mikey Robins, Paula Duncan, Ian Roberts, David Field and Sunshine Coast locals Bob Ansett (business entrepreneur and best-selling author), Jim Berardo (Australian restaurateur, bon-vivant and creator of the annual Noosa Food and Wine Festival) and Xanthe Coward (XS Entertainment). Compere for the evening will be local Sunshine Coast Zinc 96.1FM radio personality, Sammy Power.

Sunshine Coast Mum to star in David Williamson's 'Emerald City'

Buderim based mum, Xanthe Coward, has been chosen to play the role of 'Helen' in the rehearsed play reading of One Night in Emerald City by David Williamson.  The event, to take place at The J Theatre Noosa, on November 26, will raise funds for the 2011 Noosa Longweekend Festival, a 10 day cultural event David and his wife Kristin founded nine years ago.

Xanthe, who auditioned for the part (along with 24 other Sunshine Coast hopefuls) last weekend, is a seasoned performer.  As well as acting, she teaches drama and coaches aspiring singers.  Along with her actor/director husband, Sam Coward, she owns local entertainment company, XS Entertainment and somehow finds the time to be a mum to four year old daughter, Poppy.  Xanthe recently performed at the Sydney Fringe Festival, after staging a successful season of Arthur Schnitzler's La Ronde in Noosa and Maroochydore earlier this year.

The talented mum said that she was looking forward to playing the role of Helen, who -- according to the script -- is a 'gorgeous bimbo' who harbours writing ambitions.

"Of course I'm ecstatic to be chosen to play the role of Helen with such a highly regarded cast and I feel privileged to be part of this one night event, showcasing the talents of one of Australia's most respected playwrights," Xanthe said.

"The very reason that my husband Sam and I set up our own entertainment company was to nurture and retain local talent on the Sunshine Coast and to encourage opportunities for artistic development, creative expression and growth.

"This is one of those amazing opportunities that has been delivered to me courtesy of the Noosa Longweekend Festival."

One night in Emerald City's star-studded cast list includes Robyn Nevin, Felix Williamson, Ita Buttrose, Lucy Bell, Daniel Macpherson, Mikey Robins, Paula Duncan, Ian Roberts, David Field and Sunshine Coast locals Bob Ansett (business entrepreneur and best-selling author)and  Jim Berardo (Australian restaurateur, bon-vivant and creator of the annual Noosa Food and Wine Festival). Comperes for the evening will be local Sunshine Coast Zinc 96.1FM radio personality, Sammy Power and thespian and national television host, Shane Bourne.

Festival Director Ian Mackellar said that he was delighted to find talent of Xanthe's calibre in the region.

"Xanthe was a real standout at the auditions.  To be able to provide an opportunity like this to a local actor and to celebrate that talent in front of some of Australia's most acclaimed thespians is what the spirit of The Noosa Longweekend Festival is all about."

Tickets to the performance will go on sale on Monday November 1 and will range from $75 - $150.  Top range tickets will include admission to an exclusive after party where audience members will get the opportunity to meet the stars of the show.

Limited cash sponsorships opportunities are also available for individuals or companies wishing to support the charity event.  Contact Festival Director, Ian Mackellar via the festival office on (07) 5474 9941.
