A tribute to Richard Wagner’s masterpiece Tristan und Isolde THE TRISTAN XS at the J is the world premiere of an innovative version of Richard Wagner’s masterpiece of love and death, Tristan und Isolde. Specially arranged by Armin Terzer for soprano, tenor and two grand pianos, this ‘extra small’ production enables music lovers to experience a Wagnerian opera ‘live’ in an intimate setting.

Leading German soprano Julia Borchert, a soloist at the Bayreuth Wagner Festival, will perform the role of Isolde with friend and colleague, German Wagnerian tenor Hans-Georg Wimmer, as Tristan. The version for two pianos and two pianists will be performed by the celebrated young Australian pianist Alex Raineri and John Woods, lecturer at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane. A video installation by Australian video artist Stephen Hamacek, inspired by the works of German artist Thomas Sydow, will evoke the atmosphere of Wagner’s music in stunning images. Wagner expert Peter Bassett and Dr Belinda McKay from Griffith University will guide the audience through this exciting concert.

TRISTAN XS will appeal to a wide range of music lovers. Richard Wagner’s passionate opera Tristan und Isolde will enchant those who encounter it for the first time, while Wagner fans will be excited by the novel format of TRISTAN XS. The duration of the performance is 2.30 hours, including an interval of 40 minutes.
