Cast: Gerard Jugnot,, Kad Merad, Bernard Pierre Donnadieu

"Paris 36" is set in a Parisian neighbourhood in 1936. The focus is a local music hall and the people whose lives are tied up in it, from an aspiring singer to the stage manager whose wife has run off, to the Communist union leader to the fascist landlord. Writer-director Christophe Barratier manages an amazing juggling feat as he combines comedy, drama, politics, and romance, managing to keep all the balls in the air while creating a thoroughly entertaining film.

Pigoil is the stage manager. He is crushed by his wife's betrayal but focuses on reopening the theatre when the landlord shuts it down, desperate to have a success for the sake of his young son.

Jacky is at once the comic relief and one of the film's great tragic figures. A man of modest talent who wants to be a great comic and impressionist, he nearly closes down the theatre with his inept act. Yet when the landlord Galapiat recruits him to do anti-semitic bits at a local rally of Nazi sympathizers, he is greeted with laughs, cheers and applause. Jacky is conflicted. He's not a fascist or a hater, but those are the very people giving him the approval he's been so long denied
Then there's Douce the would-be singer who turns out to be a great talent. She can save the theatre, unless the lure of greater fame elsewhere causes her to move on.

There's more. In fact there's enough storylines for several movies, or at least a miniseries, but Barratier keeps it moving in an entertaining fashion. We even get some musical numbers, and enough happy endings to bring a smile to the most jaded moviegoer.
