Veggie Village Piadoori Oven working bee
If you have ever hankered to build your own wood-fired oven, get down and get some hands-on practice at Veggie Village's Piadoori Oven Working Bee Sunday April 5th. Veteran oven builder, Bob Cameron of Rockcote, will be directing a team of willing workers to build a Piadoori oven in the community gardens.
Veggie Village promotes sustainability and community participation through growing organic fruit and vegetables in a friendly and fun environment at Di Hurst Oval, Rufous St, Peregian Beach.
Bob says that Veggie Village's piadoori oven will be a wonderful community asset, and encourage sharing, enjoying and celebrating healthy food.
"Imagine coming down to the gardens in the afternoon, where the oven has been fired up, and chat and laugh with others while your pizza, bread or roast slowly cooks. Doesn't get much better than that!" says Bob.
Bob will begin the working bee with an overview of oven theory and design, and then construction will probably take the rest of the day (so if you are staying on to help and learn, please bring your own lunch.)
Bob is passionate about building ovens and says that his Piadoori oven invention combines two ancient cooking technologies -- the pizza oven and the tandoori oven. While his design reflects the principles of sacred geometry, it is based on hard science backed up by thousands of years of human ingenuity.
"The unique configuration makes both ovens much more energy efficient. Traditional materials are simple: clay, water and straw, all low impact, fitting Veggie Village's environmental philosophies. But with Veggie Village's oven we will also be using recycled pavers and granite offcuts from the Hastings Street redevelopment," says Bob.
The exterior layers of insulating clay and straw, however, lend themselves to artistic expression -- and Veggie Village's piadoori oven may yet take the external form of a frog, or... who knows? One of Bob's recent oven projects became a woolly mammoth!
