OPERATIF!’s annual outdoor opera event, in the sprawling Noosa Botanic Gardens, at Lake Macdonald, Cooroy, is guaranteed to appeal to anyone who enjoys music.
The event features five fine performers who will don elegant gowns and tails before taking their places on the magnificent lake-side stage area, graced for the day with a stunning 6-foot Yamaha grand piano (supplied by local specialist Nigel Boyd Pianos.)
The cast is led by OPERATIF! founders (and Sunshine Coast residents), soprano Jennifer Parish and baritone Stewart Cameron who are now in their 20th year of ensuring people in all sorts of locations can enjoy the best of opera and song. They are joined by three acclaimed colleagues, the vibrant mezzo-soprano Hayley Sugars, who recently spent two years as a principal artist in Wiesbaden and Coburg, tenor David Kidd, a founding member of the Ten Tenors, with whom he toured the world for 10 years before settling back in Brisbane and Scottish-born accompanist John Woods. John masterfully ensures the singers are musically supported and his illustrious career in England and Europe reads like a book! How fortunate he now calls Brisbane home!
The program will feature OPERATIF!’s customary blend of the best of Opera and Song. A major highlight will be a large section of Puccini’s Madam Butterfly...starting from Butterfly’s famous aria, One Fine Day, then on to the Flower Duet where Butterfly and Suzuki strew the little house with flowers pending tenor, Pinkerton’s return and then the poignant final trio where Pinkerton who has taken an American wife, realises the enormity of Butterfly’s predicament, and that of their young son. This is an opera dear to the heart of OPERATIF! who twice staged it in Brisbane to much acclaim. Their intention had been to tour Queensland with the production but alas, Arts funding could not be secured in order to ‘spread the love’ to those living beyond Brisbane...
There will be arias and ensembles from many of the great operas, La Traviata, Samson and Delila, Rigoletto, The Pearl Fishers and more and the concert will finish with some Rogers and Hammerstein and other greats from Musicals as well as a selection of favourite Songs.
OPERATIF! invite you to join them at the lake on the first day of spring and to enter into the spirit by preparing a picnic to enjoy in the gardens prior to the 2.30pm performance. Whilst there is brick seating within the purpose built Greek theatre, it is advisable to bring a low cushion or blanket to sit on. The wet weather venue is Cooroy RSL hall.
This unique SE Queensland event makes for a great day out. With tickets cheaper than last year, at just $40 or $35 for Groups, it’s an affordable chance to enjoy some fabulous opera and song.
