Amazingly Active Seniors   30/03/2006

Noosa Seniors are gearing up for another month of very non geriatric activity with the help of a lively Council programme ranging from abseiling to outrigger canoeing.

Community Development staffer Wendy Guthrie says the April series will include Tai-Chi, Mountain Bike Riding and the latest European craze, Pole Walking.

"Thursday morning Tai Chi in the Noosaville Lions Park has proved so popular that we have now extended it to Pomona's Stan Topper Park on Friday mornings," said Ms Guthrie.

"Abseiling was a huge hit in its Seniors debut last year, with 14 participants aged up to 70 years taking on Mt Tinbeerwah and Cr June Colley gamely joining them.  The date for our next mountaineering effort will be April 19th.

"The Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club helps us enormously with that particular activity, which has proved so popular with Seniors that several have very enthusiastically joined the Outrigger Club.  With its support, on April 12th we will be able to offer up to six craft on the Noosa River.

"Mountain Bike Riding is scheduled for April 26th - the "mountain" bit referring to the type of bicycle, not the terrain to be tackled.  Roger and Lee Newton of Bike On Australia run this programme, rendezvousing at the Noosa Yacht & Rowing club carpark and they have bikes for those who do not own one.  Roger's current plan for Wednesday the 26th is for everyone to jump aboard his mini bus and head to Peregian Beach for a ride along the coastal bike track."

The latest fitness trend in Europe is Pole Walking and Noosa Seniors can join the trend setters at sessions on North Sunshine Beach on April 7th and 21st.  Virginia Roberts leads the activity and comments that walking with poles is especially beneficial as it improves balance over uneven terrain, helps to prevent slips, sprains and other injuries.  "It also burns more calories, increases oxygen uptake and gives the upper body a workout", says Virginia.

All these Noosa Senior activities require bookings, except for Tai Chi.  To reserve a place or obtain further information, please call Michael Shaw at Council's Community Development Unit on 5449 5104 or check the "Ways to Get Active in Noosa" page on Noosa Council's website at www.noosa.qld.gov.au.  Gold coin donations are welcomed for all activities to help fund future programmes.
