15-04-09 Somme Documentary Hits Home For Local Family
Local actor and filmmaker Tony Nixon is premiering his latest documentary, Forgotten ... a Somme Story on the 26th of April at Nambour Uniting Church.
Nixon's great Grandmother took a secret to her grave. Unknown to the family her first husband Bryen Henaghan died in one of the most infamous and bloody chapters of WW1; The Somme.
Forgotten ... a Somme Story is the story of how Tony tries to reunite his family with the man whose blood runs through their veins. For 92 years Bryen was fogotten, but now reunited with his family he is no longer an unknown soldier.
Travel through England and France in this moving story as Nixon attempts to find exactly where Bryen lies, 'in the corner of a foreign field.'
Although best known for live performance Nixon started work in film and television in the mid 1980's in his native England. Migrating to Australia in 1988 he has continued to work in the arts performing across the country and internationally.
For more than 14 years he has called Palmwoods on the Sunshine Coast home, although recently has been spending a great deal of time on tour.
'One of the reasons I'm trying to grow my production company is to spend more time at home with my family,' says Nixon. He is also working on another wartime documentary about the light horse reenactment groups here in Australia.
'Most of the filming is complete, including local footage and footage I shot in France and at Melbourne's shrine of remembrance,' says Nixon. 'I need somewhere between five and seven thousand dollars to finish the project by filming in Gallipoli and Beersheeva, but so far I haven't been able to get the funds. If any sponsors out there are interested they can come and see Forgotten to get an idea of what I am all about, or they can contact me and I will send them a DVD.'
Forgotten ... a Somme Story will have its first public viewing on the big screen at Nambour Uniting Church this Anzac weekend, and supper will be available for purchase in the foyer afterwards with proceeds going to the Nambour Uniting Church Youth Group.
