All universities need to understand their place in the world and how they interact with that place - classic geography! For a regional institution it's a far more intimate relationship than may be the case for a sandstone institution. In a typical regional university setting demographic, economic, sociological and cultural characteristics will vary widely across the catchment.
If a university is to connect with its communities and aspires to be a transformational force for change, it needs to understand and interact with this geography.
Maps and statistics and an understanding of people / place dynamics are powerful tools when it comes to facilitating an understanding of the relationships between institutions, people and place. And in the hands of a geographer-leader, they're a powerful planning tool and communication aid.
