Research to improve our roads, protect the world’s polar regions, and understand how climate change is affecting coastal erosion will be presented at a free public lecture at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday 19 August.
USC’s Professor of Engineering Mark Porter and Lecturer in Science and Engineering Dr Adrian McCallum will discuss their progress in ground-breaking engineering research in a one-hour presentation at USC’s Innovation Centre auditorium from 5.30pm.
The talks will be followed by a question and answer time and the opportunity to meet the academics while enjoying light refreshments.
Dr McCallum’s research has taken him to the Himalayas, the Arctic and Antarctica. He will share his experiences combining remote and often hazardous journeys with the pursuit of science and engineering.
His next expedition, the ‘Outer Edge Polar Challenge – Ride for Leukaemia’, is getting plenty of attention. The team will be trialling an eco-friendly snow vehicle, the Snowsailer, designed to break world records as it sails across Antarctica to the South Pole.
“We hope to prove that wind-powered travel is a viable and environmentally friendly means of travel and transportation in Antarctica,” he said.
Professor Porter will outline the diverse fields of engineering study and research underway at USC.
“Engineering research is for the whole community and not just universities,” he said. “It is intended to make the world work better, to create something new. Real world engineering makes people understand the everyday practical applications of living.”
Professor Porter will discuss innovative research in road pavement monitoring and analysis, permeable pavements, timber engineering using local hardwoods and the impact of climate change on coastal erosion. He will also touch on new work in robotics, medical applications and recycled concrete materials.
This event is the second in the Research@USC series of free and informative talks that are open to the Sunshine Coast community. The series will continue with Environment on Tuesday 16 September, Primary Industry on Tuesday 21 October and Education on Tuesday 4 November.
