Queensland Ballet to bring a taste of ballet to the Sunshine Coast
Sunshine Coast audiences will soon be able to experience the best of Queensland Ballet thanks to the Tutus on Tour regional program that will see the Company tour throughout Queensland.
Featuring a selection of three short ballets, the tour will perform at The Events Centre, Caloundra on Thursday 22 September at 7.30pm.
Queensland Ballet Artistic Director Li Cunxin said the Company was looking forward to visiting more Queensland towns and cities than ever before and sharing the beautiful art form of ballet with audiences across the state.
“We are so pleased to be taking this program throughout Queensland as it showcases Queensland Ballet at its best in ballets that will have wide appeal,” Mr Li said.
“The program includes works by three acclaimed choreographers with Ershter Vals by Ma Cong, Three Preludes by Ben Stevenson and Greg Horsman’s Verdi Variations.
“We programed these pieces for the tour as they offer both contemporary and classical ballet so there will be something for everyone.”
Ma Cong’s Ershter Vals, which translates as First Waltz, includes folk dance influences mixed with classical technique yet is a contemporary work that has received much audience and critical acclaim.
Three Preludes, created by American choreographer Ben Stevenson, is performed to Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Preludes. It is a classical pas de deux (one couple dancing) comprised of three movements that develop speed and intensity as the performance progresses. Three Preludes is an internationally awarded ballet.
Greg Horsman’s Verdi Variations is a humorous look at the rivalry, competition and hierarchy that can exist within a ballet company. This beautiful classical piece includes virtuosic solos, dazzling pas de deux and ensembles all with a dash of humour.
Mr Li said he thought the program was a perfect offering that would appeal to both avid ballet fans as well as those new to the artform.
“Audiences will be able to experience the versatility and outstanding technique of Queensland Ballet dancers through this program,” he said.
“It’s important to us to take our beautiful artform of ballet throughout the state so that we can connect with as many Queenslanders as possible through dance.
“We’re proud to be Queensland’s state ballet company and always look forward to this time of year when we can pack our ballet shoes, sets and costumes and hit the road to share our love of ballet with new audiences.”
Queensland Ballet’s Tutus on Tour is supported by The Playing Queensland Fund and arTour, initiatives of the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, part of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.
