Only a few months after the flooding, we hear little about their recovery in the media and the communities in and around Grantham are still struggling to rebuild their lives, homes and businesses. An enormous number of people have experienced the loss and injury of family members, friends and neighbours. In addition to this emotional trauma, many of their homes, work places, schools and other communal meeting areas are gone or damaged.
While families in the towns seem to be slowly piecing things back together, we have found that many of the families from this area who live and work on the land don’t seem to be receiving the same level of support.
It has been suggested by spokespersons in Grantham that a Community Tractor would ease some of the pressure being experienced by farming families. It is anticipated that farmers would be able to borrow this tractor for periods of time to assist with rubbish removal from fields, (still a problem since January), plowing, planting new crops and general farm work.
Our group intends to purchase a community tractor for Grantham and its surrounding districts. We have an understanding of the specifications required for a suitable tractor and anticipate we will need to raise between $50 000 and $60 000.
Initially, we have decided to hold a Black Tie Dinner on 9th July, with a fundraising auction to be held on the same evening. We are hoping you will be able to assist us with a generous donation that can be auctioned on the evening. Guests will be provided with a full list of items to be auctioned prior to the dinner to allow them to be well prepared for their favourite items!
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and consider our request. We understand that these are financially tight times for many of us and are very appreciative of any contribution you are able to make.
Those who live on the land have a reputation for working hard, contributing strongly to their communities and being humble to offers of help. Maybe the small contribution of a community tractor will give some families the “leg up” they need to help them restore a little normality to their lives.
For that, the Grantham farming community would be thankful.
