Value mental health during Queensland Mental Health Week

Sunshine Coast Council invites the community to get involved in a range of Queensland Mental Health Week events happening across the Coast between October 9-15.
Mayor Mark Jamieson said the Sunshine Coast Social Strategy highlighted the importance of ensuring people are safe, healthy, feeling valued, embraced and connected, with council fostering opportunities for people to contribute to the strength of our community.
“Queensland Mental Health Week is an opportunity for the Sunshine Coast community to acknowledge and reflect upon mental health, take action to promote overall mental health and wellbeing and reduce the stigma associated with mental ill-health,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“The aim of Mental Health Week is to promote social and emotional wellbeing to the community, encouraging people to maximise their health potential and enhance the coping capacity of communities, families, individuals while supporting mental health recovery.
“The theme for Mental Health Week this year, is to ‘value mental health’ – that of our own, our loved ones, friends and colleagues – at home, work and at play.
“Mental Health Week is particularly important as the more we get our community members talking about mental health, the more likely that a family member, young person, a friend or associate will speak out and get help.
“Good mental health provides a sense of wellbeing, confidence and self-esteem.
“It allows us to fully enjoy and appreciate other people, day-to-day life and our environment.
“When we are mentally healthy we can form positive relationships, use our abilities to reach our potential and deal with life’s challenges.
“I encourage people experiencing, or at risk of mental ill-health, to get involved during Mental Health Week by attending one of the many local events – with everything from summits and symposiums to exhibitions and wellness walks to select from.”
To support our community, council is developing a free online directory to help Sunshine Coast residents get the right services at the right time.
