Channel 10 ran an item on Monday following assertions of unsafe track which has led a number of our patrons to phone us querying if we were still operating
We are in full operation, we were spot audited by a Queensland Transport track engineer on Wednesday 01 June and found not to require direction.
We thank those outlets who did not run the original story (which we gather was widely distributed), and request assistance with this counter statement to advise we are running and particularly that the Race the Rattler footrace on the Queens Birthday Monday is definitely ON
With the very popular “Race the Rattler” foot race taking place on Monday 13 June - the Queens Birthday long weekend - now is the time for runners and teams to register their participation.
This is the thirteenth year the Mary Valley Heritage Railway will be hosting this prestigious 18.5km foot race, with individuals and teams racing against the famous “Valley Rattler”, a 1950 restored steam locomotive pulling the train of heritage carriages.
The first registered 300 race entrants travel out on the “Valley Rattler” to Dagun, nestled in the foothills of the lush Mary Valley, then strive to beat the steam train back to the old Gympie Railway Station.
Commencing at 9:30am from Dagun Station it is expected that the first entrants will cross the finish line around 10:30am.
If individuals feel they are not up to that distance then groups of four can enter the Team Challenge where each runner completes just over 4.5km of the course.
Supporter’s tickets are also available. The train has a capacity to transport 300 supporters to cheer on the runners. Supporters are transported to Dagun by bus where they board ‘The Valley Rattler’ to cheer on the runners as the train makes its way back to the Old Gympie Station.
Supporters should book as quickly as possible to ensure they are on the train.
Entertainment at the Gympie Railway Station will commence after the initial runners have arrived and continue into the early afternoon. Food and drinks will also be available.
President of the Mary Valley Heritage Railway, Tony Hallam, said “This event keeps growing every year and has become a major sporting event for South East Queensland and the Gympie area. The Valley Rattler has been through challenging times with floods impacting on our income but now all trains are operating to timetable and we look forward to another successful Race the Rattler event.”
