Race the Rattler Challenge
Gympie, home of the Valley Rattler, will again host an event with a difference on Monday, June 13th, 2005 with the running of the annual Valley Rattler Gympie Challenge from the Mary Valley Township of Dagun to the old Gympie Railway Station.
The "Challenge" is an 18.5 km foot race from the Mary Valley Township of Dagun, running against the C17 Steam Train with a contingent of supporters aboard. Tremendous prize money to be won.
A "Team Challenge" will again be part of the event with 4 runners per team, each team member having to complete approximately 4.5km of the 18km run.
Entry fees are $38.00 per individual entrant or $150.00 for each team. All proceeds raised from the event will go to aid the Mary Valley Heritage Railway Museum to assist with the expansion of its operations to enable it to achieve its ultimate aim to operate steam trips seven days a week.
All entrants will receive a commemorative T-shirt, sponsor products and entry into the lucky draws. In addition, the first 300 entrants will receive a trip aboard the Valley Rattler from the old Gympie Railway Station to the start of the race at Dagun.
The Event will commence at 8.00 am with the departure of the Valley Rattler from the old Gympie Railway Station with the entrants on board. Supporters can follow the Race by purchasing a supporters ticket for $15 (Children $7.50) which entitles them to a bus ride leaving at the same time as the train, to meet the train and the runners at the start at Dagun. The supporters will then board the train to race and support the runners back to Gympie, the Race starting at 9.30 am at the Dagun railway crossing. Relay shuttle buses will take the team members to the changeover points, and then pick up from the changeover points and take them to the finish line.
The course follows the Mary Valley Road with a 4 km detour along gravel road to keep in touch with the Rattler. The finish will be at the old Gympie Railway Station.
Entry Forms are available and can be obtained by contacting the Mary Valley Heritage Railway on telephone 5482 2750
