International Roots Reggae Legends Hit the Sunshine Coast. One of the most well-loved international Roots Reggae acts KATCHAFIRE begin their Australian tour this week as part of 20 dates around the country over the next two months in support of brand new single 'Burn it Down'.
With 4 highly successful studio albums, multiple awards, platinum sales and highest selling singles under their belt, the NZ band is ready to share fresh new music and fresh new vibes to Aussie crowds again. Their popularity and critical acclaim has seen them share the stage with artists such as Damien Marley, Steel Pulse, UB40, The Wailers and Michael Franti amongst many others.
On the back of a successful US tour, we're stoked to have them on the Sunshine Coast for us, appearing at Friday Live at The Helm this Friday night with L.A.B and Sun Salute in a Roots-Reggae all-star affair.
We had a chance to have a chat with KATCHAFIRE in the lead up to their Sunshine Coast show at Friday Live at The Helm (answers below).
Oz tour starts this week! How are you feeling about the upcoming dates?
The tour is feeling awesome... reaching out to smaller places and 'the burbs' to get closer. L.A.B are great fun.
Reggae seems to be experiencing a real growth phase worldwide at present in terms of uptake and appreciation. We've seen this first hand in our recent travels to USA, Mexico and Japan. Why is there a spike in genre popularity at present do you think?
Our manager says that the growth in the last 2 years is more than the last 20 years combined! I guess 'cos more people are waking up to the good vibes Reggae brings, including commercial artists.
You guys worked with well known Jamaican producer Stephen 'Rev' Maxwell on your latest single 'Burn it Down'. How was that experience?
Cyber-space is amazing! We plan on heading over in 2017 as Rev has been great to work with. He has actually toured the world with us as our keyboard player for over a year now.
You've been quite vocal about your success in the US vs. achieving success in Australia/NZ. Why do you think Aussie/NZ bands have to travel overseas and achieve success first before they are properly recognised in our own countries?
I think bands can find success in or out of home, I see plenty of artists who crack it at home and not abroad or vice versa.
We're keen as to have you back on the Sunshine Coast at The Helm. It's great you guys are getting regional. Any memories of the Sunshine Coast and why do you continue to play the regional gigs?
We love the Caloundra Music Festival and have also had some great nights at other local venues. We feel at home with you fellas, nice chilled out beach vibes!
Any tips for working musicians to stay motivated and what are your top 3 tips for muso's on the road?
Eat great food and have adventures in each city. Make time to explore wherever you are, learn some local culture, meet local muso's and of course keep in touch with loved ones - Skype is a blessing!
